Panchlait

Based on a short story by Phanishwar Nath Renu, an ace writer of Hindi literature, Panchlait narrates the story of a small village in North India that still has no electricity. The people live in darkness, engrossed in their little sorrows and joys. There are 8 different tolas (communities) divided on the basis of cast, and all the other tolas except Mahtos have their own 'Panchlait' (Kerosene lamp). Mahtos feel inferior to this and decide to procure a Panchlait for themselves, as having one is a mark of honor. After several efforts finally, the Panchlait is respectfully brought and even worshipped!

 

On the other side, a romance was brewing between Godhan and Gulri Kaki's daughter Munri. Gulri Kaki was annoyed as Godhan used to sing a song from Hindi film 'Awara' to her daughter, due to which she complained to the panchayat and Godhan was outcasted. But the story takes a sweet turn when the time came to light the lamp, as the Mahtos discovers that no one knows how to, though the solution lies with Godhan, as Munri reveals that Godhans knows to operate it. In the meeting, the Panchs decide that Godhan will be taken back and sends a word for him, but he denies. Finally, Godhan agrees and enters in a heroic manner to light the lamp. The gleaming light brings joy and happiness, transforming the darkness of the entire village and the villagers' hearts into a kindle of light.
